What Is a Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a procedure that helps to treat gum disease. As gum disease forms and develops, small pockets in the gums around your teeth will deepen. These pockets then become a breeding ground for plaque, bacteria, and other debris. It’s nearly impossible to clean these small pockets on your own, so scaling and root planing helps to clean your teeth and provide the gums with the ability to heal closer to the teeth, thus reducing the size of these pockets.

Why Is a Scaling and Root Planing Needed?

You may need to have a scaling and root planing if you have gum disease. The procedure is done easily in our office and takes just about an hour. The process normally requires two visits, with one visit focusing on one side of the mouth and the second visit working on the other. By coming in for scaling and root planing, you’re taking a proactive approach to your gum health and care.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Scaling and Root Planing?

We can examine your gums for signs of gingivitis and gum disease during each of your bi-annual appointments. Most people who have gum disease will benefit from scaling and root planing. There are other periodontal treatments available if you have more advanced gum disease that wouldn’t improve with a simple deep cleaning. Because the procedure is easy and requires only local anesthetic, many of our patients find it easier than other periodontal treatments.

What Happens During a Scaling and Root Planing?

We first administer a local anesthetic to the area being treated. We work to scale the teeth and remove plaque, tartar, stains, and heavy buildup. We then work deeper into the gum pockets to remove any debris that’s found. Once the debris has been cleared, we smooth the roots of the teeth, allowing the gums are able to heal more closely to the teeth, closing up these pockets. You will be scheduled for a second appointment so that the same treatment can be performed on the other side of the mouth.
